9/23/12: It was a battle for the top of Division 2 on Saturday between North Springs and Blue Devil B1. Being the two remaining teams undefeated within the Division, both knew it would be a tough, physical game. North Springs jumped out to a 1 – 0 lead less than three minutes into the game, with Jackson Sanders scoring a goal. The rest of the 1st quarter was a defensive battle and the score at the end of the quarter remained 1 – 0. Josh Stovall added a goal for the Spartans early in the 2nd quarter, but by halftime the Blue Devil’s Wilson and Gaddis had each added a goal to even the score, 2 – 2.

North Springs again came out scoring the first 2 goals of the second half, with Justin Cohen scoring both of them. The teams traded goals in the remainder of the 3rd quarter with Wilson and Stovall each adding one for their respective teams, making the score 5 – 3 North Springs entering the 4th quarter. Both teams felt the game within their grasp with only 1 quarter to go, but Sanders of North Springs added a goal less than 1 minute into the quarter to put the Spartans up by 3, giving North Springs the boost they needed to finish. The Blue Devil’s Hoover added the final goal for his team, and Cohen and Sam Satterfield each added 1 for North Springs making the final score 8 – 4 North Springs. Both goalies played great games as well, with the Blue Devil’s Ullrich making 5 saves and North Springs’ Taylor making 6.

Now, the only undeafeated team within Division 2, North Springs knows they will have three tough games to finish out the season, but they will celebrate this victory (at least until practice on Tuesday).

9/22/12: Dalton defeated the visiting Wildcats 14 – 12 in an exciting game on Saturday at the Dalton Rec Center. Michael O’Brien led the Dalton scoring effort with 6 goals, while Pierson Scarborough and Taylor Mathis each added 3 scores, and Luis Rosales and Matt Franey contributed one apiece.

Dalton pulled to a 12 – 6 lead late in the 3rd period, but Jeremy Ungaro led a Wildcat rally in the fourth, scoring 3 of his 7 goals in the last three minutes of the game to bring the Wildcats back to within 2.

Pierson Scarborough won 3 sprints for Dalton. In goal for Dalton, Chris Kazmierski and Matt Franey combined for 6 saves against 27 Wildcat shots, while William Kirk and Aubrey Sims stopped 8 of Dalton’s 24 shots on goal for Wildcat.

9/14/12: The APS Knights controlled yesterday’s game against Wildcat during the first half, leading 7-2 at halftime. But, by the end of the 3rd quarter Wildcat, playing with only one sub, battled back to trail just 8-7. APS prevailed in the 4th quarter to win 10-7.

The APS Knights were paced by #18, Ryan Switzer, with 5 goals, and #7, Luke Paddock with 4 goals. Jeremy Ungaro, #8, led the Wildcats with 5 goals.

9/13/12: This week’s game between Lakeside A and Marist was a battle from the get go. Three quick goals on both sides left the score at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was back and forth again, but Marist edged ahead 5-4. By half-time, Lakeside had drawn three ejections against one of Marist’s stronger players, cap #7, Takunda Mafundikwa. Ejection troubles continued for Marist in the second half as cap #10, Elise Breaux, was awarded her third ejection for the game as well. Overall, Lakeside drew 14 ejections during the contest.

The third and fourth quarters showcased Lakeside’s much improved defense as the team did not allow a goal in the second half. Nathaniel Holt led the charge for Lakeside drawing multiple ejections and scoring 5 goals. It should be noted that he did not do it alone though. Great passing and communication by the entire team helped Lakeside win the game against a very tough Marist squad.

9/8/12: The Spartans Water Polo team used a balanced scoring attack, grit and resiliency to overcome a first quarter deficit to beat SPX A 6-5 on Saturday at GAC. After Jonathan Edwards scored the first goal for the Spartans, the Golden Lions roared ahead with goals from Josh Beck, Rafael Garcia and Zach Halbig to end the first quarter with a 3-1 lead. The Spartans came out with fierce determination in the second quarter, scoring 3 straight goals (one each from Brett Kester, Kevin Roughgarden and Chris McCarter) to take a 4-3 lead at halftime.

The second half was a defensive battle with more scoring from the Spartans Roughgarden and the Lions Brandes in the 3rd quarter. Not willing to go down without a fight, the Lions Brandes tied the game in the 4th quarter but Kester answered with a goal for the Spartans to move ahead once more. Goalie Keegan Musser secured the win for the Spartans by making a great save on the final shot of the game as time expired.

These games were the first-ever, official GHSWPA games specifically for girls, and over 40 athletes participated. The GHSWPA 2012 season has twelve Girls Division games scheduled, plus a Girls Division Championship planned for October 7th[press release] PDF

In the first game yesterday, the Eagles jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the 1st quarter behind 2 goals each from Lennox Balog and Becky Bass. On the other side, Cecilia Probst from SPX demanded attention at the center position with strong offensive moves and shooting. Cecilia tallied 3 goals by halftime and added another on a 4th quarter penalty to total 4 goals. Also chipping for Team 4 were Elise Weidner from Blessed Trinity and Zoe Schneider from APS Knights. The Eagles continued a balanced offensive attack throughout the game, mixing in experienced and beginner players. Leading the way for the Eagles was Bria Williams (4 goals), Lennox Balog (3), Becky Bass (2), and Brooke Phillips (2).

Game two saw both Lakeside and Pope battle back and forth, swapping leads several times through the game. Each team was well matched and played solid defense. Leading the way for Pope were Ally Foley and Danielle Allers, each putting in 2 goals. Pope took a lead into the 4th quarter, but Lakeside battled back to tie the game at 8-8. Strong shooting from Lakeside players Claire Wilson and Emily Olive prevailed as Lakeside closed out the game 11-8. Wildcat Water Polo 2012

8/11/12: Led by Robbie Scott with 8 goals and Austin Palmer with 5 goals, Southern Crescent defeated Wildcat Water Polo 19 – 13 at the first game played at the Kedron Aquatic Center. The game was played outdoors and the weather held off nicely. Wildcat started slowly, but played very well in the second half. Southern Crescent would like to thank the players and parents from Wildcat for driving down to the south side of town for the game.

The league’s 2012 regular season, overtime rule was put to practice right away on day one, with the APS Knights / Blue Devil B game ending in a 10 – 10 tie at the end of regulation. A single, three-minute, sudden death overtime period was then started, with each team getting one timeout in the period. If the game ended in a tie at the end of the single, three-minute, sudden death overtime period, then the game would have ended in a tie. At about the 1:30 mark though, Blue Devil B scored the game-winner off of a deflected, field-blocked shot in to the upper corner of the APS Knights goal earning Blue Devil the 11 – 10 SDOT victory.

4/1/12: Players from Spartans Water Polo (GAC), Golden Lions Water Polo (St. Pius), Blue Devil Water Polo (Norcross), and Southern Crescent water polo, under the name “GAC”, and coached by JR McMillan of GAC and Michael Peters of St. Pius, teamed up to compete in University of Georgia’s Spring Invitational collegiate tournament.

The tournament began with a tough fight against University of Central Florida (UCF), a well seasoned and conditioned team. Each team traded the lead back and forth, but UCF ultimately won the match (UCF went on to win 2nd place in the tournament). It was a tough loss for our players, but they channeled that desire to win into their next game against the UGA Alumni Team, of which JR McMillan was a player. GHSWPA players showed their true strength and determination during this game, defeating their coach’s team quite handily. Finally, the team faced a tough Texas A&M water polo team for the final match. With a strong press defense and explosive offense, our players wore down the Texas A&M team, collecting its second win of the tournament.

The “GAC team” included the following GHSWPA athletes:

Austin Palmer (SCWP), Clay Koellner (SCWP), Sam Beckwith (SPXWP), Christopher Travers (SPXWP), Jason Wiener (PACE), Mark Gross (BDWP), Travis Bruce (BDWP), Kevin Roughgarden (GAC), Chris McCarter (GAC), Andrew McCarter (GAC), Kevin Hughes (GAC), Keegan Musser (GAC), Zach Musser (GAC), Max Musser (GAC), Kyle Buckner (GAC), Jonathan Edwards (GAC) and Ben Ohlnhausen (GAC)
