Jesse Frazier and Sam Beckwith

11/21/14: Alumni Watch — Two former GHSWPA student-athletes were a part of the team that recently won the 2014 National Collegiate Club Championship, played in Kearns, Utah. Sam Beckwith from St. Pius X (SPX) and Jesse Frazier from Collins Hill (Eagle) are members of the Lindenwood University water polo club, which defeated the San Diego State University water polo club by a score of 13 – 8 to secure the national championship.

During the regular season, Sam and Jesse played for the Lindenwood B team, which finished second to their A team in their regional championship. Their coach included them in the squad he took to Utah to contest the national championship. During the 2014 season, the Lindenwood team was lead by a core of players from Spain who carried the team to victory. Practicing with this core of players has helped both Jesse and Sam take their water polo skills to the next level. Congratulations to Sam and Jesse on their championship!

Also, John David Strickland from Norcorss (Blue Devil) played for the Duke water polo club in 2014. Duke qualified for collegiate club nationals as the Atlantic Regional Champion, finishing tied for 13th.

The GHSWPA first partnered with American Water Polo in July 2012, becoming an American Water Polo League at that time. 2014 was therefore the third consecutive season of the successful relationship between the two organizations.

Per the terms of the agreement, the GHSWPA will received annual support for its State High School Championship in the form of new men’s and women’s KAP7 water polo balls, a growth fund determined by a percentage of KAP7 purchases made by GHSWPA teams to be used to help fund an annual water polo clinic in Georgia or for league equipment, and additional free gifts for student-athlete award winners. In return, KAP7 retains its rights as the league’s official water polo supplier including being named as the official ball of the GHSWPA, having KAP7 balls be used in all GHSWPA games, having signage and banner advertising at GHSWPA events that will allow it and on the league website, plus other various GHSWPA advertising situations.

9/29/14: The S & R Sport Coach of the Month for September 2014 is Monica Szalma of the APS Knights (GA) and ODP. For winning, Monica receives a $50 gift certificate to S & R Sport.

Monica, her husband and their young daughter walked on deck to their first Dynamo Water Polo Club practice from Holland in July, 2013. Within a couple of weeks, Monica had agreed to help fellow DWPC teammates Robin Smith and Stu Sheldon volunteer coach the Atlanta Public School (APS) Knights team. The APS Knights practice twice a week mid-July through early October and field three teams in the Georgia High School Water Polo Association fall season. “Almost half of our team are girls, among the highest rates in the league,” explained Sheldon. “It was so great to have a female coach walk on deck last summer, especially one with Monica’s pedigree. Our head coach, Robin Smith, and I kinda got the team pumped up for her arrival.” As it turns out, Monica was the first of two female coaches to join the APS Knights in a matter of weeks. Former NorCal high school goalie Brianni Lyons, now a student at Spelman College in Atlanta, also volunteered.

Shortly after she joined the APS Knights coaching staff, Monica agreed to serve as USAWP ODP coach for the first-ever state-specific satellite program in program history. Coach Szalma managed a five month series of selection events, training camp weekends and other events that linked up with the primary SE Zone ODP effort in Florida. 75 of the 450+ high school players started the ODP process with Monica. Five months later, 10 Georgia athletes traveled to Florida and then west for their respective championship tournaments. Monica returns in 2014 as an ODP Age Group Coach for the Southeast Zone in 2014-2015. She has been a great addition to the Atlanta water polo community and is deserving of this honor.

9/8/14: APS Knights Place Four on USA Water Polo Academic All-America Roster

Congratulations to APS Knights Water Polo Club players Sloan Hodges, Cat Hume, Jess Hume and Ciara Sadaka for their hard work in academics and water polo. All four young ladies earned a place on the USA Water Polo 2013-2014 Academic All-America roll, announced Friday, September 5th, by USAWP, the national governing body for club water polo in the United States. Student-athletes registered with USAWP need a 3.6 GPA on a scale of 4.0 to qualify. All four also received Outstanding Achiever honors as each of them had at least a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Hodges and the Hume twins attend Grady High School and play for both the APS Knights A and Girls teams. Sadaka attends Pace Academy where she plays for the Pace team in addition to the APS Knights Girls team (Pace does not currently field a Girls team). All are in the eleventh grade.

In the pool, all four participated in the 2013-2014 USAWP Olympic Development Program for the Southeast Zone. Sloan, Jess and Ciara advanced to the national ODP tournament, played this past March in California.

“370 girls from across the country received USAWP 2013-2014 Academic All-America honors,” explained Monica Szalma, one of their coaches for the APS Knights. “The fact that these four have proven themselves outstanding on both sides of the ‘student athlete’ name is great acknowledgement of their dedication and ability in both areas. It is also exciting for the APS Knights to know that our small, seasonal water polo club scored a full 1% of the national Academic All-America accolades from USAWP.” A former NCAA Division I and European water polo player herself, Coach Szalma is also the Georgia coach for the USAWP ODP program.

9/5/14: The Gwinnett Daily Post has published a nice feature on Collins Hill’s Head Water Polo Coach and Assistant Swimming and Diving Coach, Brian Collins:

“Brian Collins is the head water polo coach at Collins Hill and an assistant for the swimming program. Collins first began played water polo as a senior at Shiloh and continues to travel worldwide with a masters team. He came on board with the Eagles’ program not long after it started six years ago.”

“In this installment of Getting to Know, Collins talks to staff writer Christine Troyke about a variety of topics, including living in Australia, ignorance being bliss for people starting to play water polo and trying to explain his real job to teenagers.”
